Goal Setting: From Dreaming to Taking Action
The ABC's of Goal setting: There are many ways to set goals, and I believe it is important to keep learning, reflecting, and refining what works for us. Goals can help give direction to our dreams, but they are also deeply personal. What feels motivating and meaningful for one person may look very different for someone else
In this blog post, I want to gently explore goal setting from a few different perspectives - what a goal can mean, how to create goals that feel clear and energising, and how to take small, meaningful action towards them. You might like to grab a pen and paper as you read, because there will be a few questions along the way for you to reflect on.
What does a goal mean to you?
If you asked several people what a goal is, you would probably receive several different answers. For some people, a goal may be a clear result they are working towards. For others, it may feel more like a dream, a direction, or a hope for the future.
So here is a gentle question to begin with - what does a goal mean to you?
A goal is often described as an aim, ambition, or desired result. I also like the image of goal posts on a field. Goals give us a boundary and a direction, but the space between those posts is where the growth happens. That is where we learn, adapt, take action, and discover what we are capable of.
Having a clear goal can also be a little like setting a destination into your GPS. You may know where you want to go, but the path can change along the way. There may be detours, unexpected turns, or new things to learn, and that is part of the journey.
Dreams, visions, and goals
When thinking about goals, it can be helpful to also consider your dreams and visions. These words can sometimes feel similar, but there may be slight differences for you personally.
A dream may be something you quietly hope for. A vision may be the picture you hold of what life could look like. A goal can help turn that dream or vision into something clearer, more focused, and more actionable.

Take a moment to ask yourself: what dreams, visions, or hopes have been sitting quietly in your heart?
Making your goals SMART.
Everyone sets goals differently. Some people love a notebook and pen. Others prefer sticky notes, highlighters, vision boards, calendars, or a quiet walk to think things through. However you set goals, it can be helpful to give them some structure.
One useful approach is to make your goals SMART. That means asking whether your goal is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely.
You may also like to think about the timeframe for your goals. Are you setting a goal for this week, this month, this year, five years from now, or even longer?
A helpful exercise is to write down a list of your desires without judging or editing them. Get creative. Let the ideas flow. This list is just for you, so give yourself permission to be honest and free with your thoughts.
Once your thoughts are on paper, choose one or two that feel meaningful and begin turning them into clear goals.
Choose goals that energise you
One of the most important things I have learned about goal setting is that how you feel about your goal matters. A goal that truly excites, inspires, and energises you can help you keep going when life feels busy, challenging, or uncertain.
Some goals are things you already know how to do. Others are things you think you can do. Then there are the big, imaginative, heart-stirring goals that may feel a little outside your current reality, but still deeply meaningful. These are the goals that can stretch you, encourage growth, and keep you connected to a bigger vision.
So, ask yourself:
- Do my current goals excite and energise me?
- Are these goals for me, or am I carrying someone else’s expectations?
- What do I want more than anything?
From goal setting to taking action
Once you have a goal that feels meaningful and motivating, the next step is action. But before thinking about tasks and to-do lists, it can be helpful to pause and ask - what does taking action mean to me?
Action does not always need to be big or dramatic. Sometimes action is one small step, one helpful conversation, one brave decision, or one commitment made today. What matters is that your action feels meaningful, aligns with your values, and connects back to your purpose.
When your actions are connected to something that matters deeply to you, it becomes easier to stay motivated and committed, even when there are speed bumps, potholes, and detours along the way.
Practical ways to take action
There are many ways to take action towards your goals. The key is to find what works best for you. You may like to try:
- A daily commitment statement: a personalised reminder of how you want to show up and who you are becoming.
- Affirmations: positive statements that support belief, resilience, confidence, and helpful thinking.
- Schedules or task lists: simple plans that help you prioritise and focus on what matters most.
- Goal cards: a written statement of your goal that you can carry with you as a regular reminder.
- An accountability partner: someone who encourages you, checks in with you, and helps you keep moving forward.
- Starting today: small, consistent steps build momentum over time.
You do not need to do all these things at once. Trial and error is part of the process. Notice what helps you feel focused, encouraged, and connected to your goal, then keep refining from there.
Keep growing as you go
Taking action is not about getting everything perfect. It is about moving forward, learning from experience, adjusting when needed, and continuing to grow. Success, as so beautifully stated by Earl Nightingale, can be seen as the progressive realisation of a worthy goal or ideal, which means every small step matters.
So here is one final question for you - what is one small, meaningful action you could take today towards a goal that matters to you?
You do not need to have the whole path figured out. Begin with one step. Then another. Let your goal guide you, your values ground you, and your actions move you gently forward.
Happy goal setting, action taking, and growing.
Much love,
Susan xx
